Introducing the Katachi Collection by Dutch Made

We are excited to introduce Katachi, a new collection from Dutch Made Custom Cabinetry, which is now available at our showroom in downtown Nashville, TN.

Explore the Katachi collection in this article below.

The Meaning Behind Katachi

Katachi is a Japanese word with no direct English translation, but it speaks to something we recognize instinctively: a design philosophy rooted in reverence for nature, masterful hand craftsmanship, and the quiet confidence of subtlety over showiness. It's the relationship between material and form, expressed with intention in every detail.

A Fusion of Two Great Traditions

Designed by Scott A. Stultz for Dutch Made Custom Cabinetry, Katachi draws inspiration from two seemingly distant yet deeply compatible design traditions: the warmth and precision of traditional Japanese wooden houses and the clean, functional elegance of Scandinavian modern furniture and architecture.

The result is furniture-grade frameless cabinetry that feels both timeless and fresh—equally at home in a contemporary loft or a craftsman bungalow.

The Signature Element: Kōshi

What immediately sets Katachi apart are the vertically slatted screens called kōshi (pronounced "koh-shee"). These decorative panels have graced Japanese architecture for centuries, filtering light and creating visual depth. In the Katachi collection, kōshi are placed within door panels and openings, adding texture and dimension that transforms cabinetry into art.

Dutch Made offers several kōshi profiles to suit your aesthetic: square, half round, and gothic—each creating a distinctly different play of light and shadow.

Two Door Styles, Endless Possibilities

The collection features two distinctive door designs:

Katachi I presents square-edged stiles with set-back rail faces. The bottom rails feature a sloped panel bead that creates smooth, gentle transitions—a small detail that speaks to the collection's thoughtful design philosophy.

Katachi II takes a softer approach with quarter-elliptical stiles that curve gracefully, while top and bottom rails are set back to intersect those elegant curved faces.

Make It Your Own

One of Katachi's greatest strengths is its versatility. Through your choices of wood species, finish, kōshi inclusion, and integrated metal hardware, you can take this collection in countless directions. Whether your taste runs toward authentic Japanese minimalism, warm Scandinavian modern, Arts and Crafts tradition, or something entirely your own, Katachi provides the foundation for a truly personal kitchen.
